The Meherza were the first Hilalian Arab tribes (nomads coming originally from Southern Arabia) to reach the outlying areas of Gourara in the early 13th century. They were soon joined by other groups which gradually settled in the region of Tinerkouk, north-east of Timimoun. Today their descendants are indiscriminately called Meherza, whatever their origin may be.

The tebel is a bowl-shaped drum, the name for which is found in India (tabla) as well as in western Europe (timbale, tympani). The word is used here to mean a song accompanied by this instrument.
